The 14^th annual “Sweet Sounds Downtown” Jazz Festival, sponsored by the Downtown Westfield Corporation (DWC), takes place during July and August. Each Tuesday evening, July 6th through August 31st from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm four jazz performances can be heard outside in downtown Westfield.  Rain dates will be the following Wednesday evenings at the same time. Jazz groups will be located on Central Avenue in front of Banana Republic, the lawn in front of the North Avenue Train Station, the plaza at the corner of East Broad and North Avenue, and Elm Street in front of the Baptist Church,

 

“Sweet Sounds Downtown is extremely popular for all ages. From contemporary or traditional jazz to blues to big band, there are live performances to please everyone.” said Sherry Cronin, DWC Executive Director.  “The event is great for businesses downtown on Tuesday night.”  According to Beth Brenner, Asst. Executive Director, “We have a mix of great bands which played in past festivals as well as new bands this year.  Sweet Sounds has become so popular that we have to turn away many talented groups.”

The Town Book Store occupies the site of Westfield's first library, built in 1906 with a grant from Andrew Carnegie. The bright, inviting space includes leather seating for browsers and a reading table for children. Ample parking is available along Elmer Street, East BroadStreet and in a metered public lot behind the store. We offer individualized service, like special orders, free used and out-of-print book searches, discounts for book clubs, gift wrapping and shipping, and author signings that have been a mainstay of the store for years.

Downtown Westfield is one of the 32 main street communities in New Jersey. The Downtown Westfield Corporation uses the Main Street Approach^TM that was developed by the National Trust's National Main Street Center in 1980 to assist downtown revitalization efforts nationwide. Four elements create this program: Organization, Economic Restructuring, Design and Promotion.

Design enhances the visual appearance, attractiveness and traffic management of the business district. Historic building rehabilitations, street and alley clean-ups, parking and traffic calming issues, colorful banners, landscaping, and lighting all improve the physical beauty of the downtown as a quality place in which to shop, work, walk, invest, and live.

Design committee meetings are usually the last Wednesday of the month. These dates are subject to change depending upon availability of the volunteers.

In 1985, the Reeve family donated their circa 1885-era home (adjacent to Mindowaskin Park on Mountain Avenue) to the town of Westfield, NJ with the intention that it would become a home for the Westfield Historical Society. Now, the Society is moving ahead with that vision - to restore the house, make a home for the archive collection and possibly create a new Victorian museum and society archive on the perimeter of our downtown park.

Ideally, the Society wishes to create a beautiful and functional space to house the archive collection, and to provide meeting and research opportunity. We also wish to create a new public space - so that our visitors could see rotating exhibits, experience the flavor of Victorian Westfield, and even stop in our Victorian cafe for a hot cup or coffee or cocoa and a ginger cookie.

A feasibility study is underway; we expect more details will be available around the end of October.

Obviously, a project of this scope has many challenges (note the condition of the house in the photo), and there are many opportunities to be involved - and meet some of the interesting people of Westfield! If you are interested in participating in any aspect of this project - be it design, fund raising, grant proposals, publicity, or helping to clear the brush and manage the current needs of the house, etc., we would certainly appreciate your help.
