New Jersey Festival Orchestra nominated in 2017 JerseyArts.com People’s Choice Award -- Please Vote!

The New Jersey Festival Orchestra, based in Westfield NJ, has again been nominated for the JerseyArts.com People's Choice Award. The annual awards program, run by Discover Jersey Arts, pays tribute to the work of New Jersey’s vital, vibrant and diverse arts organizations.

The NJFO, which was nominated for “favorite NJ symphony/orchestra” by fellow Arts organization members of Discover Jersey Arts, is asking the entire Westfield community and beyond to vote for them as their favorite "Symphony/Orchestra" by going online to the NJFO website at njfestivalorchestra.org or to the orchestra’s Facebook page. Voters can also go to JerseyArts.com/vote.

Majestic Winds to Perform a Fundraiser Winter Concert January 12th at First Baptist Church

Majestic Winds, the professional wind band of the New Jersey Workshop for the Arts, will present a winter concert at the First Baptist Church, 170 Elm Street, Westfield, NJ on Thursday, January 12, 2017 at 7:30 p.m.  The ensemble will be directed by Howard Toplansky, an NJWA staff instrumental instructor.  “Our musical offerings are geared to please a variety of musical tastes and range from Renaissance to Ragtime favorites,” stated Toplansky.

Marinarella” Overture by Julius Fucik, Highlights from “Exodus” by Ernest Gold and “Reine de La Mer” by John Philip Sousa  will be the main selections on the first half of the concert.  “Slavonic Rhapsody No. 2”  by Carl Friedemann will also be featured on this program.

The popular monthly FLAMENCO NIGHTS @ GALERIA WEST concert series returns on Friday, July 8, 2016 at 7:30pm to the Galeria West Art & Music Gallery, located at 111 Quimby Street in downtown Westfield, NJ. The event features a passionate Flamenco Puro performance with accomplished Spanish flamenco guitarist Pedro Cortes and Shlomi Cohen on sax & flute along with acclaimed guest flamenco dancers La Conja and Jose Moreno.

Library hosts Foreign Film Festival beginning July 11

The Westfield Memorial Library is pleased to present six foreign films for the months of July and August. They will be shown on consecutive Mondays beginning July 11 at 2:00 and 6:30 p.m. The library is located at 550 East Broad Street.

The first film, Lady in the Van, is in English and runs 104 minutes. Starring a magnificent Maggie Smith, it tells the true story of a woman of uncertain origins who “temporarily” parks her van in Alan Bennett’s (Alex Jennings) London driveway and proceeds to live there for 15 years.

Live Performances of Edward III, Henry IV at Library

On Thursday, July 14, the Westfield Memorial Library will present “Edward III,” and on Thursday, August 11 the library will present “Henry IV.” Both shows are performed at 7:00 p.m. by the Hudson Shakespeare Company. The Library is located at 550 East Broad Street.

Edward III tells the story of King Edward, the grandfather of Richard II, who is a married, middle-aged and very successful king who assumes he has complete mastery over his world....until he meets the Countess of Salisbury, a beguiling, but married woman. The Countess, confident in her own world and marriage, is shaken by the charismatic king as well when war brings them together.

Music and About Music Abound at the Westfield Memorial Library

Music and programs about music continue to abound at the Westfield Memorial Library throughout the summer. On Wednesday, July 6, at 7:00 p.m., there will be program on the music of the 50’s and 60’s, and on Saturday, July 9 at 2:00 p.m. the Lincoln Center Local Free Screening Series continues.

Marc Black will help audience members relive the colorful, musical eras of the 50s and 60s through his humorous and engaging program. He will use a wide range of popular songs including surprising favorites like, “Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini,” great rock tunes like “Blue Suede Shoes” and moving folk songs like Bob Dylan’s “Blowin’ in the Wind.”

Richard II and Kenn Morr Band at Westfield Memorial Library

On Wednesday, June 8 at 7:00 p.m., the Westfield Memorial Library will present “Richard II,” and on Saturday, June 11 the Kenn Morr Band will perform at 2:00 p.m. The Library is located at 550 East Broad Street.

Richard II will be performed by the Hudson Shakespeare Company. It tells the story of Richard II, a king since childhood, who has continually been told he is God's representative on earth. He takes on that role with relish, as he wraps himself in iconic imagery while disregarding his citizens.
