Hudson's Bay to sell Lord & Taylor for $100 million

Hudson's Bay to sell Lord & Taylor for $100 million

Hudson's Bay Company is selling Lord & Taylor to clothing rental subscription service Le Tote for $100 million. As part of the deal, Hudson's Bay will retain ownership of its Lord & Taylor real estate and, starting in 2021, it has the right to reassess and potentially redevelop these locations.

The deal allows the department store chain to continue and potentially transform operations as its sales have fallen and it's lost touch with today's shoppers. It will also allow Hudson's Bay, owner of Saks Fifth Avenue and Hudson's Bay in Canada, to further simplify its business, as Executive Chairman Richard Baker looks to take the company private while the retailer grapples with sweeping industry change.

"We're excited to have reached an agreement with Le Tote that creates a new model for Lord & Taylor, bringing together fashion rental subscriptions with traditional retail," said Hudson's Bay CEO Helena Foulkes in a statement. "

Kathleen Miller Prunty Named Interim Executive Director

Kathleen Miller Prunty Named Interim Executive Director

Following a Special Executive Session of the Board of the Downtown Westfield Corporation (DWC), Kathleen Miller Prunty has been named Interim Executive Director, effective September 3, for a term of six months. The announcement was made by Patricia Hanigan, Chair of the DWC Board.

“I’m thrilled to bring Kathleen’s visionary leadership to the DWC,” said Hanigan. “She is a seasoned professional who oversaw the widely recognized transformation of Cranford’s thriving downtown. Her vast experience will be a tremendous asset to our DWC Board members and staff, our downtown property owners and merchants, and by extension, all Westfield residents.”

Hanigan stated that, in addition to overseeing the daily operations of the DWC, Miller Prunty will also be charged with re-evaluating the structure and overall strategic vision of the organization, and will lead the search for a permanent Executive Director.

Miller Prunty served as the Director of Business & Economic Development and Special Improvement District (SID) in the Township of Cranford from 1997 to 2018, where she oversaw downtown economic revitalization and transit-oriented development projects generating close to $90 million of private investment. Her business recruitment initiative resulted in an average vacancy rate of 3% for more than ten years. Under her leadership, Cranford received the Best Downtown Award in 2018, and she was named the Union County Economic Development Director of the Year in 2014.

Miller Prunty has served three terms as the President of Downtown New Jersey, and has been a Board member since 2000. In addition, she is a key organizer of the Raritan Valley Line Mayors’ Alliance.

“We are so fortunate to have Kathleen lend her vast expertise at this important inflection point for our Downtown,” said Mayor Shelley Brindle. “Her many accomplishments in Cranford are visible, proven, and innovative. During her tenure with us, we will look to her to shepherd the Master Plan recommendations for Downtown Westfield into a new strategic vision that will accelerate its transformation.”

“I look forward to working with the Downtown Westfield Corporation Board, Mayor Shelley Brindle and the business and property owners to develop a progressive, forward-thinking plan for the downtown business district. Westfield is a wonderful community, and like so many other towns, it is brimming with potential and opportunities that can generate enthusiasm for businesses and residents,” said Miller Prunty. “Downtowns are the heart and soul of a community and often the most recognizable face of a town. There is so much talent and energy in Westfield that I expect will find its way to the downtown.”

The 30 Best Restaurants in New Jersey 2019 According to New Jersey Monthly

Congrats to Chez Catherine for making this distinguished list, again! "Modern French cooking is alive and agile at Chez Catherine. So are the charm and warmth the late Catherine Alexandrou brought to the restaurant when she founded it in 1979. Owner Stephane Bocket, maître d' Robert Madden and chef Christine Migton are fully in sync. In a comfortable, home-like dining room, where white tablecloths bespeak hospitality rather than hauteur, Bocket and Madden are alert to your needs, but not intrusive. Migton's food, from duck breast with raspberry coulis to Dover sole filleted tableside, is sumptuous and satisfying, light enough to leave room for her classic desserts. Soufflés, worth the $5 upcharge, may be the gustatory equivalent of sailing in a balloon over the Seine. 431 North Ave. W., 908.654.4011. Read more...www.chezcatherine.com

DWC Awarded Transformation Grant from Main Street New Jersey Program

DWC Awarded Transformation Grant from Main Street New Jersey Program

Downtown Westfield Corporation (DWC) recently received a Transformation Grant from the Main Street New Jersey (MSNJ) Program and will use the $20,000 grant award to partially fund a mural at the South Avenue circle underpass.

This year marks the first time in its 30-year history that the MSNJ Program has awarded grants to designated MSNJ district organizations around the state. The grant funding is part of a larger effort by the Murphy Administration and the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs (DCA), which administers MSNJ, to commit more resources to community revitalization programs that focus on small businesses and neighborhood improvement projects.

“Downtown business districts play such an important role in the economic and social health of our communities, which is why Governor Murphy and I have invested significant resources in the Main Street New Jersey Program,” said Lt. Governor Sheila Y. Oliver, who serves as DCA Commissioner. “This investment includes awarding Main Street grants for the first time ever to help downtowns with improvement projects, placemaking, and transformation strategies. All of these grant-funded activities are scheduled to be completed by year’s end and we can’t wait to see how they positively impact downtowns around the state.”

The mural represents the work of Ricardo Roig, local artist and creator of the images of Westfield.  It is designed to connect the South side and North side separated by the train and be a platform for additional public art in the future.

According to Sherry Cronin, DWC Executive Director, and applicant for the grant, stated “I’m pleased that I was able to acquire this grant on behalf of Downtown Westfield. Main Street NJ has been very supportive over the years with grant opportunities and zero percent loans for improvements to the district.”.
