Spotlight On: Brummer’s Chocolates, a Westfield Institution

Spotlight On: Brummer’s Chocolates, a Westfield Institution

October 19, 2017, Westfield NJ -- The candy business has been in George Brummer’s family since 1904, for over 100 years. George’s grandfather first established his business in Jersey City. His two sons eventually took over the business, then his grandsons, George and Robert. When the original store closed in 1988, Robert moved to Ohio and George bought the old Martha Lorton Candies in Westfield. He changed its name to Brummer’s, where he continued his family’s candy business to this day.

George has been working in his current location at 125 E. Broad Street in Westfield since 1988. That’s nearly 30 years!

Brummer’s is an old fashioned candy shop in every sense of the word. The place looks like it did originally, down to the Victorian wallpaper and vintage candy molds.  They manufacture all the chocolates and fudge on premises in the back using old family recipes, and they sell them by the pound. They also carry retro candies such as Mary Janes, buttons, jaw breakers, Pez and more, all in grab-and-go pre-packaged bags from $2.95. Chocolate pops and bars start at $1.99. Kids are welcome, although they request that backpacks and skateboards remain outside due to the narrow aisles and packed shelves.

Brummer’s has a strong business in party favors for weddings, birthday parties, and other special occasions. They also do corporate gifts and can customize logos by embossing on the chocolate or on specially printed boxes.

Let’s show George some Westfield love! Stop in and buy some homemade chocolates. They have some of the best dark chocolate covered sea salt caramels anywhere. Or consider ordering your holiday corporate gifts or next party favors from Brummer’s.

Brummer's Chocolates has also been selected as one of the best Candy Shops in New Jersey by Best of AmericanTowns, a property of AmericanTowns Media! Read more:

Message from DWC Chairman, Dominick Verdic

Message from DWC Chairman, Dominick Verdic

It is always a pleasure working with Sherry Cronin, Beth Brenner and Jamie Lemberg at the Downtown Westfield Corporation. At a time when the retail environment is challenging nationwide and politics is divisive, it is extraordinary that the DWC and its staff continue to focus on addressing the changing needs of our business community in a non-partisan way and  embracing and adapting to new trends and ideas for additional growth.

Historic Restoration of Westfield's Flatiron Building

Historic Restoration of Westfield's Flatiron Building

In case you haven't seen it, Westfield's flatiron building is undergoing a historic restoration. Sherry Cronin and the DWC Design Committee (Peg Lockwood, chair, Robert Newell, David Bailey, Lisa Tsavekou, and Barbara Vincentsen) has been working with the owner on this significant project. The old facade was removed revealing the original cast iron columns. The design will be guided using historic photos from the early 1900's and the 1930's. The building will have retail on the first floor and two apartments on the second and third floor with a rooftop terrace. Stay tuned!

New Free 'Express Spaces' for Parking 15 Minutes in Westfield

New Free 'Express Spaces' for Parking 15 Minutes in Westfield

Enforcement now only 10am-6pm, Monday-Saturday

The Westfield Town Council approved an increase in the number of hours of free parking downtown and the creation of free 'express spaces' for people parking for 15 minutes or less at the June 20 town council meeting.

Both changes are the result of recommendations by the Mayor's Downtown Task Force and discussions among the Public Safety, Transportation & Parking Committees. Ordinance 2084 changes the hours of paid parking downtown for shoppers and visitors from the current times of 9am to 7pm to 10am to 6pm, effective immediately. Signs and stickers in the downtown lots are being changed. The ordinance will also allow the Westfield Police Department to designate certain parking spaces as 15-minute 'express spaces' for those picking up takeout orders from Downtown restaurants or running quick errands. Read more...
