Shopping Local in Westfield Just Went Online With Beyond Main

Shopping Local in Westfield Just Went Online With Beyond Main

Westfield is open for business in-person and now, online. With the help of Beyond Main Downtown Westfield, the online local e-commerce site, locals from near and far will now be able to shop many Westfield retailers from their home or mobile devices.

Beyond Main Downtown Westfield, an online "shop local" e-commerce site, has just gone live in Westfield, NJ, in time for Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday.

Beyond Main has been steadily growing since its 2018 debut in Summit, NJ.  The company’s mission is to help small businesses and communities thrive in the new era of retail with a convenient way to shop local. That mission has taken on a whole new meaning in the era of COVID-19 with the now critical added benefit of safety.

Beyond Main offers easy fulfillment methods, including buy online, pick-up in-store, curbside delivery, local delivery, and shipping. Through a new partnership with the

Downtown Westfield Corporation, consumers can now make purchases from multiple Westfield businesses using a convenient consolidated check-out process, making it easier than ever to shop local this holiday season.

“We are thrilled to partner with Beyond Main to help Westfield businesses establish convenient, online options this holiday season,” said Bob Zuckerman, Executive Director, Downtown Westfield Corporation. “Our business owners have demonstrated remarkable resilience in a year like no other, and the coming weeks will be critical for them.

Providing additional consumer options like the services of Beyond Main are instrumental in our efforts to keep the focus on shopping local.”

“The Westfield community is incredibly loyal to its dedicated local business owners, and Beyond Main provides residents and visitors with improved access to their favorite products and services,” said Westfield Mayor Shelley Brindle. “This is an important addition to our ongoing efforts to support Downtown Westfield as they kick off their most vital timeframe of the year.”

Participating Westfield retailers to date include Ahrre's Coffee Roastery, Acting Out, Beyond Trends, The Chocolate Bar, Cinnaholic, Club Pilates, Evalyn Dunn Gallery of Art, Indigo Art Studio, Mimi and Hill, Outta Hand Pizza, Patricia and Paul's Artisans of Fine Oils and Balsalmics, and Sole Shoes — with more additions expected in the coming days.

Gift cards will be available for Beyond Main Downtown Westfield starting on December 5. A perfect way to show appreciation for teachers, the Westfield PTO has rallied around the "shop local" cause and is expected to use the new online website for holiday gifts.

“We are so grateful to the DWC and Beyond Main for their collaboration in support of Westfield's small businesses,” said  Anna Mastroianni, owner of Sole Shoes.  “Shopping local is crucial to the vibrancy of our downtown and maintaining the sense of community so deeply felt in Westfield. Having one site where one can browse through our unique shops couldn't be easier. It's a win-win collaboration!”

“Our family is thrilled to have the ability to shop our Westfield retail stores online with delivery. It’s a great way to support our local community while having the convenience and safety of doing it from our home,” says Westfield resident and shop local supporter, Aneesa Chignoli.

"When you shop or patron a local business, almost 50 percent of what you spend gets recirculated back into your local economy, versus one percent of the same spend through third party online and big-box sites," said Beyond Main Founder, Kate Giovambattista. "This has a ripple effect that not only hurts small business but our communities at large. That is why we created Beyond Main, to change this dynamic and offer a better solution to small businesses and customers wishing to support local businesses in a modern way. Our platform and technology allow individuals to search, discover, shop, and support their favorite local businesses on-demand with ease and convenience," added Kate.

The Downtown Westfield Corporation (DWC) is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a grant of $72,530 from the Main Street New Jersey Covid-19 Relief Program. These funds will provide comprehensive COVID-19 relief to the downtown commercial district and to the greater Westfield community through a targeted campaign to bring shoppers downtown during the 2020 holiday season. Additionally, the grant award will assist the DWC in coordinating a long-term plan to fill any vacancies resulting from COVID-19.

“We are both excited and grateful to receive this grant award,” said Bob Zuckerman, Executive Director of the DWC. “It will give us the ability to make a real difference for our merchants during the holiday season and for our entire district heading into 2021.” The grant will cover the following initiatives that the DWC has undertaken or will commence over the next two months:

  • Launch of a Downtown Ambassador Program to promote holiday season shopping.

  • Purchase and distribution of 3,000 reusable, branded canvas bags.
  • Rent for use of the former Ann Taylor space for a Holiday Downtown Visitors Center.

  • Beautification of downtown parklets.
  • A contract with MJB Consulting to perform a detailed retail market study which the DWC will use to fill vacancies and improve retail mix.

“This grant will give the DWC the resources we need to assist our merchants during this challenging time for our economy as a result of COVID-19,” said Bob Zuckerman. “We’re ready to hit the ground running to bring these worthwhile initiatives to fruition on behalf of all the great businesses within the DWC.”

Over 20 Restaurants and Eateries Offered Fall Foodie Strollers Delicious Dishes and Cocktails on Sunday, October 4

Over 20 Restaurants and Eateries Offered Fall Foodie Strollers Delicious Dishes and Cocktails on Sunday, October 4

Sunday, October 4th, the Downtown Westfield Corporation hosted its Fall Foodie Stroll, where over 20 Downtown Westfield restaurants offered sample sizes of some of their most delicious dishes and cocktails to nearly 400 participants. The sold-out event attracted people from 23 municipalities covering Westfield to New York City, and was very successful in showcasing Westfield’s many dining options. Proceeds from wristband sales were donated to William Sonoma’s No Kid Hungry Charity, which works to “end child hunger in America by ensuring that all children get the healthy food they need every day to thrive, and No Kid Hungry pledged to spend the funds raised locally in Union County.”

With nearly 1 in 6 restaurants around the country closed due to COVID-19, the push to support small businesses has never been more important. Says Patricia Caminos, owner of Ono Bowls, “The importance of shopping small is not just for the business but for the employees as well. Our business is a safe place for our kids who work here. By supporting us you’re helping us support them, and in turn helping the community.”

Restaurants offered tasty seasonal dishes like pumpkin spice lattes and autumn red sangrias, bite size plates of spicy tuna rolls and coconut shrimp, homemade guacamole and burritos, and so much more. “The Downtown Westfield Fall Foodie Stroll highlighted tasty specialties throughout downtown Westfield’s diverse eateries,” explained Downtown Westfield Executive Director Bob Zuckerman. “We saw hundreds of families, couples and friends sampling some of the best of downtown Westfield’s delicious offerings — and we hope they come back soon to try out the new dishes they discovered.”

Dishes served at the Fall Foodie stroll are able to be purchased throughout the fall season. For a closer look at the full menu, click here.

AddamsFest Returns to Westfield in October

AddamsFest Returns to Westfield in October

ADDAMSFEST RETURNS TO WESTFIELD IN OCTOBER

Town-Wide Festival Honoring Westfield’s Charles Addams is Reimagined for a Year Like No Other

If isolation and distancing were an art, The Addams Family would be the masters. This year, their dynamic is on-brand as the wildly successful AddamsFest returns for a third year – this time, in a pandemic-friendly manner, and once again transforming Westfield with a uniquely exciting celebration honoring its own Charles Addams and his penchant for the macabre with a wide variety of events.

Dubbed “Alt AddamsFest” for 2020, the festivities will be shaped by creative approaches to gatherings that provide a safe environment while maintaining the initial spirit of the celebration.

Born in 1912 and raised in Westfield, Charles Addams was one of the country’s premier cartoonists, with his work prominently featured in The New Yorker. His most successful creation, The Addams Family, was inspired by his hometown surroundings. The characters that began as illustrations grew into a television series, a live action movie franchise, a Broadway musical, and last year’s Addams Family animated movie. In October, he will be posthumously inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame. What better place to honor Addams’ talent and creativity than the town where he grew up?

“The return of AddamsFest is a wonderful way to provide the community with a celebration and connectedness during a year that has challenged us all,” said Mayor Shelley Brindle. “I’m thrilled that we are able to find innovative ways to have these festivities safely and keep the spirit of AddamsFest in Westfield for its third year.”

Mark your calendars for a variety of events to be held throughout an October like no other.

  • Wicked Windows of Westfield: Once again, AddamsFest promises to transform Westfield into a fanciful, spooky, kooky destination conceived and brought to life by area artists, decorators and business owners. From October 1 through November 8, residents and visitors can support Downtown Westfield and South Avenue businesses while taking in the Wicked Windows of Westfield, an artistic celebration of Halloween and The Addams Family. Bring your camera and your curiosity to see what's in store for you and your family. Come alone or with your family and friends to enjoy the art, take some pictures and stay to shop, grab a warm meal and a cold drink in a year when supporting Westfield's businesses matters more than ever.
  • Haunt Your House Contest: Back by popular demand! Get in the spirit of the season with Westfield’s third annual Haunt Your House contest. Once again, community members will tour Westfield to view the entries and vote for their favorites using an online map of participating homes. After spending so much time at home in 2020, the expectations are high – registration opens September 14!
  • Draw This in Your Own Style – The Addams Family: The “Draw This in Your Style Challenge” is a viral trend that emerged over the past few years on social media and art-oriented websites. The challenge begins with a posted piece of artwork and then challenges others to reinterpret that drawing or character in as many different styles as possible, often with amazing and inspiring results. AddamsFest will invite the public to participate in this contest by drawing one of Charles Addams’ specific iconic cartoons in their own style and sharing their entries on social media.
  • Mystical Mindowaskin: One of Westfield’s most picturesque destinations will be the site of a family-friendly, self-guided stroll that will evolve throughout October and include features such as the Painted Pumpkin Path, showcasing works of art presented by the Westfield Public Arts Commission; Quest for the Halloween Fairy Doors, a hunt to locate these hidden portals on various trees; an Enchanted Forest; the return of the Addams Family House on Mindowaskin Pond; and a variety of innovative photo stops along the way.
  • Maniacs’ Carving Contest: Join Brooklyn’s beloved Maniac Pumpkin Carvers via Zoom for a hands-on jack-o-lantern carving tutorial, and enter your creation for a chance to win prizes from local businesses.
  • Dudley’s Drive-In (October 23 and 30): A little bit retro and naturally socially distant, a drive-in is the perfect addition to the 2020 Alt AddamsFest line-up. The South Avenue train station lot will host four drive-in movie screenings:
    • Friday October 23, 6:30PM: It’s a Halloween pajama party for the families! Get comfy, put the kids in the car, and settle in for – what else? -- The Addams Family movie, set right here in New Jersey.
    • Friday, October 23, 9:00PM: The second shift is for the braver audiences, with a screening of the classic thriller Psycho.
    • Friday, October 30, 7:00PM: Pajama family screening of Hotel Transylvania.
    • Friday, October 30, 10:00PM: Calling all Brads and Janets (age 18+)! AddamsFest tradition lives on for a late-night screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Maybe hold on to that scarce toilet paper from this year and bring it along.
  • Tamaques Haunted Trail (October 24 and 25): Cars near and far are summoned to load up with passengers and drive through this new and immersive Halloween experience in Tamaques Park. By day, the Trick or Trail will welcome families for a spooky, age-appropriate event, while the distinctly haunted Trail of Terror will be held at night for more mature attendees seeking a frightful drive. Through a combination of live action and digital simulation, this innovative attraction for a pandemic-friendly environment aims to bring the spirit of the season to a variety of age groups.
  • Charles Addams: A New York State of Mind (October 29): Missing Manhattan? Join a virtual conversation with Kevin Miserocchi, Director of the Tee & Charles Addams Foundation, as he as he regales us with tales of the saucy side of his friend, Chas, and introduces us to the new book featuring illustrations of Addams’ beloved New York City, Addams’ Apple: The New York Cartoons of Charles Addams. Get a behind the scenes glimpse of Charles and Tee Addams’ home in the Hamptons (“The Swamp”), visit the pet cemetery where they were married, and explore the mysterious home where Charles Addams’ creations were born.

“Perhaps now more than ever, the essence of Charles Addams’ creations ring true with their odd, macabre take on everyday life, and themes of home and family at the core,” said Councilwoman Dawn Mackey, AddamsFest Chairperson. “We are thrilled to bring back this celebration of one of Westfield’s most notable residents in a newly reimagined way that is reflective of the challenges, silver linings, and resiliency of 2020.”

Further details about this year’s line-up, as well as community partner events and additional surprises, will be announced in the coming weeks. Stay tuned as the altogether ooky events continue to unfold on the AddamsFest website (www.addamsfest.com) and social media channels (@addamsfest on Facebook and Instagram). All events are subject to change in accordance with public health guidelines. For more information on sponsorship and volunteer opportunities, please email info@addamsfest.com.
