Downtown Westfield has always been the heartbeat of the community, where people have gathered to socialize or to conduct business, since the town was settled around the railroad in 1720.

“It’s the place where you meet your neighbor and check on how everybody is doing," said Sherry Cronin, executive director of the Downtown Westfield Corporation. “It’s a classic town for modern families."

And, it’s among the top five finalists vying to be crowned the best downtown in New Jersey on NJ.com.

The public has the final say with online voting that is open until 9 a.m. Wednesday. But before you click, take a stroll with me to meet some of the people who rave about the place where everybody knows your name.

Spencer Savings Bank Celebrates Grand Opening in Downtown Westfield

Spencer Savings Bank Celebrates Grand Opening in Downtown Westfield

Spencer Savings Bank celebrated the opening of its new branch at 240 North Ave. West on Wednesday with a ribbon cutting ceremony. The location is one of the New Jersey-based bank’s two technologically advanced “financial centers,” a combination of a banking center and loan production office.

“We pride ourselves in helping New Jersey residents and businesses grow,” George Celentano, director of retail banking, said in his speech that night.

Among the amenities at the branch are interactive teller kiosks that allow customers to speak by video with bankers in other locations. Customers who park in the train station lot across the street will be reimbursed for parking fees.

Spencer Savings had been operating a traditional branch in Garwood. Its staff was relocated to the new center in Westfield this summer, according to the company.

Stained Glass Windows Restored at 44 Elm St.

Stained Glass Windows Restored at 44 Elm St.

Special thanks to Regina & Andrew Calcagno, property owners of 44 Elm Street (Westfield's flatiron building) and for investing in this beautiful gem! The stained glass windows were installed on October 10 by contractors George, Sal and Miguel. The 3rd floor stained glass panels were previously donated to the Westfield Historical Society by one of the prior building owners, the Rordens. After many years in the archives, they were removed, refurbished by Donna Slevin of Kick Glass Art Studio and placed back into the original frame by the Calcagno's. Donna also handcrafted the 2nd floor window at their request to replicate the design of the 1903 3rd floor original windows based on our historic photos. Downtown Westfield Corporation and our Design Committee are happy to be part of this restoration project. A true partnership all the way around! J. McLaughlin is open in the first floor retail space and the two apartments should be coming online soon. Stay tuned!

You know The Addams Family, but did you know that its creator, Charles Addams, was a widely lauded cartoonist with a vast collection of work? During the upcoming AddamsFest, the inaugural celebration of its native son, the Town of Westfield will showcase the Charles Addams Art Exhibit, graciously on loan from the collection of the Tee & Charles Addams Foundation. Sure to be the crown jewel of the festival, the collection will feature 40 handpicked original drawings, cartoons and personal photographs -- with classic Addams Family pieces, as well as those brimming with hints of Westfield and highlighting Addams’ love of New York City.

A highlight of the exhibit is the newly emancipated Charles Addams skeleton artwork. Nicknamed “Dudley,” this life-sized Addams original, drawn during his Westfield childhood, spent almost a hundred years on the second floor of a barn on East Dudley Avenue. Special thanks to current homeowners Jennifer and Samuel Khichi for generously sharing this valuable piece of history with the community.

The Charles Addams Art exhibit is generously supported by Anthony James Construction.
