Westfield Businesses Offer Shutdown Specials and Furlough Freebies to Families Impacted by Federal Shutdown

Westfield Businesses Offer Shutdown Specials and Furlough Freebies to Families Impacted by Federal Shutdown

While a deal to end the government shutdown appears to be far off, many Westfield businesses are willing to offer furloughed federal workers a little relief, ranging from free food and coffee to free fitness and financial planning services.

Around 800,000 federal employees have been furloughed or working without pay since December 21 and won't receive their next paychecks until the government reopens. January 11 was the first payday most furloughed employees missed.

Businesses across the country are offering free services -- meals, movies, and classes, among other things -- to all those impacted by what is now the longest government shutdown in U.S. history.

Locally, many Westfield businesses are generously doing something to help those affected. Here are details on how our local restaurants, stores and services providers are pitching in. (Check back frequently as this list will continually update.)

Note: Furloughed workers should simply show their federal ID to take advantage of these specials.

Ahrre’s Coffee Roastery: FREE cup of the “coffee of the day”, one per day. 104 Elm St., 908.232.7977. www.ahrre.com

Kika Stretch Studio: FREE stretch sessions at their Westfield location. Stretch away the stress and discomfort with Kika Stretch. Call or text the number provided, mention you are a government employee in need of a "Kika Boost" and they'll schedule your appointment. 66 Elm St., 908.376.9680. www.kikastretchstudios.com

Meet Cranford Author Lockey Maisonneuve at The Town Book Store in Westfield, October 20, 1-3pm

A Girl Raised by Wolves: An Inspiring Memoir of One Woman’s Journey Through Sex Trafficking, Cancer, Murder, and More

The Town Book Store will be hosting a Meet & Greet for Cranford resident Lockey Maisonneuve author of A Girl Raised By Wolves: An Inspiring Memoir of One woman’s Journey Through Sex Trafficking, Cancer, Murder, and More on Saturday, October 20th  from 1:00-3:00 PM.

In the late 1970's, in a gritty NJ town, an adolescent girl is unwittingly handed a one-way ticket by her mother to allegedly "visit" her estranged father in Florida. Young and vulnerable, Lockey Maisonneuve had no idea what was in store for her when she was sent to live with her vile and dangerous father.  During the next several years her father violently raped, abused and mercilessly sold his daughter's body repeatedly in childhood prostitution. Eventually rescued by her naive, but well-intentioned, grandparents, she begins to pull herself out of her troubled past only to eventually find herself fighting breast cancer and dealing with the brutal murder of her mother. A Girl Raised by Wolves is the inspirational memoir of a survivor of some of the darkest circumstances one can endure in a single lifetime.
