The Westfield Historic Preservation Commission invites submissions for the student portion of its Harry Devlin preservation awards program. Created in 1993 to foster an appreciation of historic preservation, the awards are named for Harry Devlin, a prominent local artist, author and architectural historian.
Any Westfield student in Middle or Senior High is eligible. Students are asked to submit a piece of writing or artwork in response to the following prompt:
Describe or depict a favorite place in Westfield as it may have existed in another era. Include specific historic details that evoke the time period and help make it come alive.
Any original essay, story, or poem may be entered in the Writing contest. Any original drawing, painting or model may be entered in the Art contest. Prizes will be awarded for each category at the Middle and Senior High level at the Devlin Awards ceremony in June.
For research and inspiration, visit the Westfield Memorial Library history room or online history database, Westfield train station murals or Westfield Historical Society Reeve House museum.
Artwork may be delivered to the HPC c/o Town Administrator, 425 E. Broad Street. Writing entries may be emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org. Please include author/artist’s name, contact information, and grade. The deadline for entries is Monday, April 15, 2019.
